Take a closer look

"Would you like the tickets to the exhibition or the movie?" the receptionist asks.

"The exhibition," I answer confidently.

I am happy that my hubby and I arrived before the closing time. The exhibition "The Fine Lines of Constructiveness - Applied Art Triennial" had been up and running for months and yet I had not found the time to visit it, and now it was two days before it ended.

"Here is a brochure that helps you to understand how the artworks are connected" the receptionist hands me the material.

I get my ticket, accept the brochure, watch a young man walking to the movie room and glance at an old man sitting behind a table reading, and walk to the exhibition area with my husband.

We first stand in front of the big wall filled with an explanation about the exhibition. I often admire how good the curators are with the words and almost as often have to face my own limited understanding of art. Then again, you don't necessarily have to understand it all to be able to enjoy it.

Two steps away are two sculptures. Knitted and crocheted human figures, so life like it's startling. I read the plaque. It says that the exhibition shows three of ten figures called Villagers. And then it dawns to me - I have seen one of the sculptures without realising.

The old man reading behind a table was handcrafted!

I turn back to take a closer look.

  3. Oh, my dear! That crocheted man reading is so very lifelike. I love what artists do with their craft in such creative ways to depict the world. Beautiful.
