"Thank you for bringing out the best in our kids. Thank you for creating an environment of enthusiasm for learning, appreciation of growing and room for making mistakes along the way."
"Thank you for being a true teacher - caring, sincere, and honest."
"Thank you for your patience, kindness, openness and all your efforts this year."
"Thank you very much. All our children became better because of you. You changed their minds and hearts. Part of you will be with them forever."
My eyes swelled with tears. It hadn't been an easy year. I had a small group of kids. Sweet kids. Kids with different emotional, social, academic needs. Sometimes the needs blocking the way to learning. We had countless talks about how our choices affect our lives and the lives around us. What words and actions support building friendly relationships. What mindset and choices help learning. For some kid these talks gave wings to soar above what they thought they were capable of, for some these talks were like a blanket to wrap around their heart to even consider trying. Academically we might not win any prizes, yet. Our growth lies elsewhere. We all learned to accept differences, to forgive, to make mistakes, to let go, to encourage, to take risks, to celebrate.
It touched my heart to know that the parents had noticed, understood and valued my role this year. From the bottom of my heart I appreciate the parents and students who have helped me to be and grow as a teacher I dream to be. I am very happy that I am moving on with these kids and parents. We can build on what we started this year and continue learning together.

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful gift! Happy end of the school year!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely to get such a thoughtful thank you! Definitely something to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteThat's just terrific! Have a wonderful summer!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way for the school year to end and summer to begin, with a carefully selected book, flowers and heartfelt notes!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gift those notes are and the book is the icing on the cake! Truly deserved!
ReplyDeleteFlowers, a book, and those wonderful comments. Lots of food for the soul. What a gift - "..part of you will be with them forever." I always told my students that once they are mine (my students), they are always mine. Glad you get to be with this group another year.
ReplyDeleteI cried through this entire post. Just plain wonderful. I celebrate you!
ReplyDeleteI love hearing stories of teachers being appreciated. Sweet when students just need to thank their teachers!
ReplyDeleteOh Terje, this post makes my heart smile. So many wonderful nuggets of happy in it. First, you being in awe of the National Geographic book is like me being in awe of your wonderful photography work. The line "Our growth lies elsewhere" - that is what teaching is all about! What a special bond you created with not only your students, but also your parents. And to think you carry that bond with you next year! Now, that is a celebration.
ReplyDeleteHow absolutely touching, Terje. You made a difference to your students and parents!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful year you had. So glad your children and their parents had the opportunity to thank you so beautifully.
