...be happy that we are awake

S. (9) sat on a sofa and scratched his chin with a pencil. He's the youngest boy in class. The smallest, the quietest, the politest, the most thoughtful and considerate. He pushed a white curl of his forehead, adjusted his glasses, and started writing.
I wondered whether he was writing about his new dog, or about what new things he had learned about Buddhism, his current inquiry interest. Or was he writing about the incident that happened yesterday at break. He had got angry. No one had ever seen him getting even slightly upset, but yesterday when Sh.(also 9) had aimed the ball clearly too high and it hit S's face he got angry. He tackled Sh, and even an hour later clenched his fists and refused to accept Sh's apology.
S. smiled and looked me. "I just wrote what I want. And now I am making a list of all the things I am happy for. I have so many things to be happy for. " He handed me the paper.

I want that all people live in peace

  1. Glad you captured this treasured moment. Your narrative made the poem even better. I read the list first, smiled, and then read the narrative. I felt my heart swell with happiness. Thank you, for sharing this with me.:)MaryHelen

  3. Wow... great capture! This makes me think about what we often might miss when we "don't have time right now" and then don't get back to check in... hmm... thanks for sharing!
